One of the ways you can absorb synthetic estrogens is from your hair care products.  Many products contain chemicals which have been proven to be endocrine disruptors.

[pullquote width=300 float=left]What is an endocrine disruptor? Endocrine disruptors are chemical substances, primarily man-made synthetics, that interfere with the function of the endocrine system.  These chemicals mimic, block or disrupt the actions of human (and animal) hormones and, unexpectedly, do more damage at low levels of exposure than at high levels. These chemicals can also work in sinister yet subtle ways by disrupting the body’s ability to produce adequate quantities of hormones or by interfering with the body’s hormonal pathways.[/pullquote]

In other words, these chemicals are mimicking estrogen.  If you are having a weight issue, or any of the other symptoms/conditions above, it is imperative that you start eliminating these chemicals from your daily usage.  Avoid the following chemicals found in hair care products:

  1. Methylparaben – Used as preservatives, found in many products. Linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity.
  2. Propylparaben – Used as preservatives, found in many products. Linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity.
  3. Butylparaben – Used as preservatives, found in many products. Linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity.
  4. Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate (SLS, SLES) – This chemical is a common ingredient in hair care and many other personal hygiene products.  It is used for it’s foaming ability and was once used as an industrial degreaser.  The Environmental Working Group (EWG) lists this chemical on their website and the 16,000 research studied on PubMed, which show ill effects from its use.  This chemical is known to cause irritation of the eyes and skin, organ toxicity, developmental/reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, cellular changes, and cancer.  There are also hidden names for SLS/SLES which include
    Sodium dodecyl sulfate A13-00356
Sulfuric acid, monododecyl ester, sodium salt Akyposal SDS
Sodium salt sulfuric acid Aquarex ME
Monododecyl ester sodium salt sulfuric acid Aquarex methyl
  5. Toluene – Known to disrupt the immune and endocrine systems, and fetal development, it’s used in nail and hair products. Often hidden under fragrance.
  6. *There are more toxic chemicals, but I am only going to list the ones that are associated with hormone disruption for the sake of this article.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has even reported their concern for these endocrine disrupting chemicals because after we use them in our hair, they end up down the drain.  Hair care products washed off of us eventually end up in our rivers, lakes, oceans, and even our tap water!  Another reason why it is important to drink filtered water!  You can read about the importance of filtering your water and what your options are here.  This tainted water also ends up hurting the animals and plant life that it supports, some of which we also consume, and most of which sustains our ecosystem.

Fortunately, there is an alternative.

I have just discovered Morrocco Methods and have begun using it myself.  Here is a lovely picture of the shampoo and conditioner I got below (in front of a lovely lavendar plant).

hair care

Earth Essence Shampoo – for normal to oily hair & scalp Floating Lotus Conditioner – for all hair types

The first thing that attracted me to this brand of hair care products is that only RAW and VEGAN and GLUTEN-FREE ingredients are used.  That is HUGE to have all 3 in one!  There is 100% no testing on animals, which I absolutely love. This company began with Anthony Morrocco, who was a stylist in a posh New York City salon (with one of his clients being Jackie Kennedy Onasis).  Time and again he saw clients come in with hair problems, only to be covered up with perms and styles.  Over 40 years, he developed the Morrocco Methods formulas with a blend of Ayurvedic (Indian method of medicine) principles and Chinese herbalism.  Only the finest natural derived minerals and botanicals harvested from around the world are used (they even incorporate lunar cycles for maximal plant potency).

But here is the major kicker for me, Ms. HormoneFIT…  You will NOT find the above endocrine-disrupting hormones in these products!  This means no disturbance in your hormones, and you can rest easy that your hair (and body) are getting the most nutrition out of these products!  No harmful chemicals, whew!

The only con I have for these products are the detoxifying period… which is not really a con.  It takes a little getting used to not having FOAMING action.  We have grown to think that there needs to be foam in order for us to be getting clean.  This is simply not true.  And as I have illustrated above, the foaming action comes from a hormone disrupting chemical.  My hair troubles consist of hair breakage, and because of the multitude of short hairs, it looks and feels as if my hair is frizzy.  I can say that my hair truly feels softer and more full of life after only a short period.  The frizziness feels and appears to have been tamed, and I am excited to see how my hair starts growing in, in the long run!

I also wanna mention the amount of chemicals, hormone disrupting and cancer causing, that are found in cosmetics… Please, please, please make the switch to makeup that does not contain harmful chemicals. 60% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream within 26 seconds (give or take)… in other words if you don’t want it inside of you, don’t put it on your skin!  My personal favorite for make up is 100% Pure. I absolutely love their blush, I use ‘healthy’ color. I also am a fan of their face powder and nail polishes. This started as a brick and mortar business and now we are lucky enough to be able to order from them online, and they offer free shipping! Your health is worth it.

My love,

Dr. Kristin
